How to read your tire size — Abu Al-Ragheb Tires, Amman

The code, piece by piece

  • 225 — the tire's width in millimetres, wall to wall
  • 45 — the profile: sidewall height as a percentage of the width (45% of 225 mm)
  • R — radial construction, used by almost every modern car tire
  • 17 — the rim diameter in inches
  • 94 — the load index: 94 means up to 670 kg per tire
  • W — the speed rating: W means up to 270 km/h

Where to find the right size for your car

Look at the sidewall of the tires on the car now, or the sticker inside the driver's door frame (sometimes inside the fuel flap). The sticker shows the size the manufacturer approved and the recommended pressure. If the two disagree, the door sticker wins.

Can I fit a different size?

Only within the limits your car allows. Changing width, profile or rim size changes the overall diameter, which affects the speedometer, ABS and stability systems. Never fit a lower load index or speed rating than the door sticker shows.

The quickest way

Send a photo of your sidewall or door sticker to Abu Al-Ragheb Tires on WhatsApp, or search by size or by car in the Tire Finder. We confirm the size and the brands in stock in minutes.

Common questions

What does XL mean on a tire?

Extra Load: the tire is reinforced to carry more weight at higher pressure. Many SUVs and EVs require it.

Is 225/45 R17 the same as 225/45 ZR17?

Yes for fitment. The Z marks a high-speed tire; the speed letter after the load index gives the exact rating.
