Tire care in Jordan's summer heat

Summer is the hardest season for tires in Jordan: asphalt that gets far hotter than the air, long highway drives to Aqaba and the Dead Sea, and cars full of family and luggage. Seven checks keep you safe.

Seven checks before you go

  1. Pressure, cold, set to the door sticker — use the 'loaded' figure if the car is full
  2. Tread depth: at least 3 mm for a long trip
  3. Sidewalls: no cracks, cuts or bulges
  4. Age: check the DOT code, especially on tires that sit in the sun
  5. The spare: pressure and condition
  6. Balancing: if the steering shook last time you drove fast, fix it before the Desert Highway
  7. Load: do not exceed the load index of your tires

On the road

Stop every couple of hours on long drives — it helps tires and drivers. If a tire bursts, hold the steering wheel firmly, ease off the accelerator, do not brake hard, and pull over when the car has slowed.

Common questions

Should I lower my tire pressure in summer?

No. Set it cold to the door sticker. Pressure rises naturally when the tire heats up, and that is accounted for.

Does nitrogen help in summer?

It keeps pressure steadier, but it does not replace a monthly check.
